Getting the fit right
A pant that fits properly is the single biggest thing you can do to stop leaks.
Check the size
Match the size on the pack to your baby. If the waistband leaves marks, or the pant is hard to pull up, move up a size.
Pull it on
Hold the pant open with the front panel facing forward, and guide both feet through. It goes on standing or lying down, whichever is easier.
Settle the fit
Pull the waistband up so it sits just below the navel, then run a finger around the legs to free the cuffs.
Change regularly
Change every three to four hours through the day, and as soon as you notice it is soiled.
Checking the fit
- The waistband should sit just below the navel, flat all the way round with no folds.
- You should be able to slide two fingers under the waistband comfortably.
- Leave the leg cuffs turned out, not tucked in. Tucked-in cuffs are the most common cause of leaks.
- Red marks at the waist or thighs mean the size is too small. Move up.
- Sagging, or leaks around the legs on a pant that is not full, usually means the size is too large.
Throwing it away
- Tear the pant open at both sides, then roll it inwards so the used surface is on the inside.
- Wrap it and put it in a covered bin.
- Do not flush it. These pants are not flushable and will block a toilet or pit latrine.
- Do not burn it in the open, and do not compost it.
Common questions about Tiny Hugs
How often should I change a pant?
Every three to four hours during the day, and straight away once it is soiled. Overnight, one pant is designed to last the night — change it first thing in the morning.
It leaked. What went wrong?
Check the leg cuffs first: if they are tucked inwards, liquid runs straight out along the thigh. After that, check the size. Leaks on a pant that is not full usually mean it is too big; leaks on a very full pant mean it needed changing sooner.
How do I know which size to buy?
Go by the size guidance on the pack, then by fit. The right size sits flat at the waist without marking the skin, and the leg cuffs meet the thigh without digging in.
Are they safe against newborn skin?
The top sheet that touches the skin is chosen for softness and skin safety, and our production is UNBS certified. If your baby has a skin condition or a reaction, speak to a health worker.
